Cadillac is coming back to Michigan.
Four years ago, General Motors announced it would move its luxury brand headquarters to New York City’s trendy SoHo district and establish the unit as a “stand-alone business unit.” This week, General Motors said it would move its headquarters back to suburban Detroit, near GM’s technical center, where much of the company’s vehicle design and engineering is done. The move was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
GM spokesman Patrick Morrisey said Cadillac will remain a separate business unit. He said Cadillac has more aggressive plans for new car launches and will increase efforts to promote electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles into the luxury car market.so It made sense to bring Cadillac marketing and management staff in New York closer to the design team in Michigan.
Morrissey said about 110 Cadillac employees work in New York, and all will have job opportunities at the new headquarters in Michigan. GM expects to have about the same number of employees at the new headquarters as it does at its current headquarters in New York, but some open positions may be eliminated.
Moved to New York Following the announcement, GM said it would allow Cadillac to “restore the brand’s preeminent position among global luxury brands, a bold challenge that requires a unique and focused new organization.” It hopes to target the brand. The money and glitz of Manhattan, noting the “premium lifestyle” of New Yorkers.
General Motors (General Motors) said it would keep open the Cadillac House, a public space used for events, concerts and art exhibitions that is part of the brand’s New York headquarters.
Johan de Nysschen, who joined the company as Cadillac president a month before the move to New York was announced, had previously worked at foreign luxury brands such as Infiniti and Audi. But he left the company in April. He will be replaced by Steve Carlisle, the newest head of GM Canada and a lifelong GM employee who joined the company 36 years ago as a student. During his career as a general manager, he has served in positions around the world.
Cadillac has seen its U.S. sales and luxury car market share decline since relocating to New York. But Cadillac’s global sales performed much better, growing 45% during the same period. Currently, about 60% of Cadillac vehicles are sold outside the United States, up from less than 40% three years ago.
